The people of Burnie offer an open invitation to all Tasmanian residents and visitors, to come to Burnie some time in October and help us Shine!

Burnie Shines in October with over 100 events and activities throughout the month to stimulate, excite, soothe and inspire you. Now in its third year, Burnie Shines has grown from humble beginnings with about 25 events, to a crammed packed program offering a depth and diversity of events, we could have only dreamed of three years ago.
There are some sensational musical events including the only Tasmanian performance of Rhonda Burchmore Live in Concert at a cabaret dinner show at the Chancellor Inn and Three Chinese Tenors, Australia's answer to Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras, appearing in concert at the Burnie Civic Centre.
The 90 strong Southern Gospel Choir will be treating us to the fantastic sound of traditional and contemporary gospel music in a free afternoon concert in Burnie Park, (just close your eyes and think of Aretha Franklin). Throughout October there will be jazz in the pubs, concerts in the gardens and soloists in restaurants. We never sounded so good!
The Burnie Orchid Society Spring Show will be on over 3 days at the Burnie Civic Centre. Rhododendrons will be in the peak of bloom at Emu Valley and a new rhododendron developed at Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden will be officially named Burnie Shines. If it's tulips that get your heart pumping then the Wynyard Tulip Festival is not to be missed with a weeklong program and colour and activities.

There are some exhilarating sporting events during October, with the Skilled Burnie Ten, the Burnie Twenty Cycle Race, B&E 321 Go! and the McDonalds Tasmanian Hardcourt Tennis Championships.
The first event in Burnie Shines is the 2003 Burnie Show, which has grown from strength to strength in the past three years and this year some lucky patron will win a Gold Coast Holiday for their family valued at over $5,000.
There is a gorgeous program of children's activities with school fetes, productions and the ever-popular Australian Paper Fishing Day, which includes the Sands Alive actives of sandcastle building and kite flying.
Burnie will be host to a number of wonderful Australian children's authors who will be telling stories, teaching story telling skills and signing books. Graeme Base creator of "Animalia" and "The Eleventh Hour" will be launching his new book "Truck Dogs" and Graham Davey will be presenting a program of tips for adults in interesting ways to pass on oral histories to children.
The Burnie City Council would like to thank the individual event organisers and community groups involved in organizing the activities and we commend the 2003 Burnie Shines program to you. We invite you all to experience Burnie in October there is sure to be something of interest to you. There is so much on offer we recommend you study the program and plan your month carefully.
